Caffeine
How Does Topical Caffeine Help with Hair Loss?
Caffeine is commonly found in over 60 plant species, and people have consumed it in forms like coffee, tea, and chocolate for thousands of years. It is known to be safe and may even offer health benefits such as reducing the risk of dementia, cancer, and diabetes.
When used for hair loss, caffeine is applied topically, usually in shampoos. This allows high doses of caffeine to reach the hair follicles without affecting the rest of the body. Studies show that regular use of caffeine shampoo can reduce hair loss and increase hair thickness after six months.
Effects of Caffeine on Hair Follicles
One study looked at the effects of caffeine on hair follicles from 14 men in a lab setting. The hair follicles were exposed to testosterone, which is known to reduce hair growth and contribute to age-related hair loss. As expected, testosterone reduced hair growth.
However, when the follicles were exposed to both caffeine and testosterone, caffeine blocked the negative effects of testosterone, leading to higher hair growth rates. Even without testosterone, caffeine stimulated hair growth.
How Does Caffeine Affect Hair Growth?
Each hair follicle goes through phases of growth and rest. In people with pattern hair loss, the growth phase shortens, and the resting phase lengthens. Caffeine can help keep hair follicles in the growth phase for longer, reducing hair loss.
Is Caffeine Effective for Hair Loss?
Studies have shown that people who used topical caffeine experienced less hair loss and noticed stronger, thicker hair. These benefits were observed by both researchers and participants. Caffeine has been effective for both male and female pattern hair loss.
Why is Caffeine Applied Topically for Hair Loss?
Caffeine is applied topically (in shampoos or lotions) instead of being taken orally because the amount of caffeine needed for hair growth is much higher than what’s found in a cup of coffee. Drinking that much caffeine would cause serious side effects. Applying it directly to the scalp delivers a higher concentration to the hair follicles safely.
Caffeine is a small molecule, so it can easily penetrate the scalp. Studies show that after just two minutes of using caffeine shampoo, significant amounts of caffeine enter the scalp and stay there for up to 24 hours. Using caffeine shampoo daily maintains these levels.
How Does Topical Caffeine Compare to Other Hair Loss Treatments?
There are a few other effective treatments for hair loss, such as finasteride and minoxidil, which are both FDA-approved. In one study, 210 men used either topical caffeine or topical minoxidil for six months. Both groups saw similar results, with increased hair growth, reduced hair loss, and thicker hair. This shows that caffeine can be a good alternative to minoxidil.
Caffeine can also be used alongside other hair loss treatments to increase effectiveness. If you’re considering hair loss treatments, it’s best to consult a dermatologist to find the right option for you.

Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto for Hair Loss
Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a small palm tree native to the United States and the West Indies. It has long been used as a natural remedy, including to prevent or reverse hair loss.
Research on Saw Palmetto and Hair Loss
Some studies suggest that saw palmetto may help with hair loss by inhibiting an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone responsible for male pattern hair loss. The medication finasteride (Proscar) also works by blocking this enzyme.
Saw palmetto may also have anti-inflammatory properties, which could help protect against certain causes of hair loss.
Key Studies:
- Small Study: In one study, 10 men with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss) were given a supplement containing saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol. Six out of the 10 men showed improvement, but more research is needed to confirm these findings.
- 2012 Study: A study involving 100 men with mild to moderate hair loss compared saw palmetto with finasteride over 2 years. 38% of those taking saw palmetto saw improvement, while 68% of those taking finasteride experienced better results. The study also found that saw palmetto was less effective in cases of severe hair loss.
While these studies suggest saw palmetto may help with hair loss, larger studies are needed to support its effectiveness.
How to Use Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is available in several forms, including oral supplements and hair care products like shampoos and conditioners.
