Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is an essential B vitamin. It plays a key role in the enzymes responsible for maintaining hair, skin, and nail health, and it also stimulates keratin synthesis.

Biotin in hair products also helps regulate sebum and dandruff, which is why it is often recommended for alopecia and hair loss.

Does Biotin Accelerate Hair Growth?

Studies show that biotin applied directly to the scalp, as found in shampoos or lotions, can significantly improve hair growth in people with temporary hair loss after about 90 days. Biotin enhances the structure of keratin, a key protein that makes up hair, skin, and nails, leading to improved hair health, including increased volume and scalp coverage.

Does Biotin Have Side Effects?

Biotin is safe for most people when used correctly. Cosmetic products containing biotin should have the appropriate concentration (between 0.0001% and 0.6%). If administered as an injection, the recommended dose should be followed. However, excessive intake of biotin supplements can cause side effects such as nausea, stomach aches, diarrhea, acne, miscarriage (pregnant women should avoid large amounts of biotin), and allergic reactions.

Shampoos containing biotin are an effective way to deliver this nutrient directly to the hair, although regular use is needed to see results.
