What is Rosemary Oil?
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean and sub-Himalayan areas. In folk medicine, it has been used as an antispasmodic, mild pain reliever, and to treat conditions like headaches, migraines, insomnia, emotional upset, and depression. Research has shown that rosemary has neuropharmacological properties, along with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, anti-tumorigenic, and neuroprotective effects. It has also been found to improve mood, learning, memory, anxiety, pain, and sleep, and stimulate hair growth.
What Studies Say About Rosemary Oil and Hair Growth
Some research suggests that rosemary oil may help with certain types of hair loss, but it may not be effective for all causes. Hair loss can happen for various reasons, including:
- Genetics
- Age
- Alopecia
- Cancer treatments or other medications
- Infections
- Hormonal changes
- Hair care practices or hairstyles
- Illness or stress
A 2015 study found that rosemary oil may be effective for treating androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness). Participants showed a significant increase in hair count after 6 months of using rosemary oil.
A 2022 study also found that rosemary oil had a similar effect to minoxidil, a well-known hair growth medication, after 6 weeks of use. Another 2017 study showed that rosemary might help manage bacterial scalp infections, which can lead to hair loss. However, people with scalp infections should consult a healthcare professional.
While rosemary oil may enhance the effects of conventional treatments, no studies have tested this theory. Additionally, it’s unclear if it’s safe to use rosemary oil alongside minoxidil or other hair growth medications.
Effectiveness of Rosemary Oil
A 2016 study on rats found that rosemary improved blood circulation and skin health. If the same is true for humans, rosemary oil could help prevent hair loss by improving scalp health. However, more research is needed. Recent studies show it may aid in hair regrowth from certain causes of hair loss, but it’s important to consult a healthcare professional to diagnose the cause and discuss treatment options.
How to Use Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth
Rosemary oil is a natural remedy, but it’s important to use it safely. Here are two ways to use rosemary oil for hair loss:
- Massage Directly into the Scalp
Rosemary oil can be applied directly to the scalp, but it should always be diluted. Mix a few drops of rosemary oil with a carrier oil, like coconut oil. Massage the solution evenly into the scalp. You can choose to leave it in or rinse it out after a few minutes. - Mix Rosemary Oil into Shampoo
Add a few drops of rosemary oil to your shampoo and wash your hair daily. Start with five drops or less per ounce of shampoo to avoid over-concentration.
Always consider any skin allergies or sensitivities before using rosemary oil products.
